Three questions to ask your newborn photographer before you book. There are so many photographers out there and it’s important to book someone who you connect with and can deliver the kind of images you want. Here are three questions that will help you determine which photographer to book.
Each photographer has his/her own style and interpretation of what “posed” vs “natural” newborn portraits look like. It is important to look at the photographers work and see if his/her style is something you love. “Posed” newborn sessions are normally done with props such as a newborn beanbag and a basket. There are also swaddles, headbands, hats, and bows that are used in the session. “Natural” newborn photos are more relax and can be done without any props.
This is an important question in preparing for the session. Some photographers do their sessions in a studio vs others who will travel to your home for the session. Depending on if you are traveling to a studio you need to be prepared with what to bring for the session such as: diapers, wipes, bottle, etc. If the session will be in your home then it’s important to pick up anything you don’t want your photographer to see. Looking to book an in-home session here are some more tips!
This answer can vary depending on the type of photos you want. If looking for those classic newborn photos they are normally taken between 7-14 days of birth. This allows for the photographer to position your baby into cute little poses more easily than if he/she was older.
Babies cry this is just part of the process, so don’t worry. The photographer you select should send you a prep guide at some point before your session. This prep guide will help you prepare for your session with tips and tricks. My biggest tip is to keep your baby awake until the session begins. This will help to ensure a sleepy baby for the photos.
The time of a newborn session can vary depending on the kind of images that are being provided and where the session is taking place. Overall a safe time frame would be 3-4 hours. This can account for feedings, diaper changes, family photos and the setup/clean up.
These are some great questions but don’t be afraid to ask your photographer whatever comes to mind. The better prepared you feel the better the session will go! Still looking to book a photographer? I would love to meet you.
